MATCH REPORTS

1st November 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Mossley Hill 6-0 Dingle (Mossley Hill goal scorers: Lauren Kirkwood (2), Hannah Parsons (3), Liz Rodriguez) This was the second game against table topping Dingle in the space of two weeks and another well deserved victory. The football wasn’t as impressive as our away game against Dingle but the conditions, a strong gusty wind and a very heavy pitch, made it difficult for both teams. Mossley were always in control though, taking a 2-0 lead at half time with fine goals from Logsy and Hannah Parsons. The result never looked in doubt, and Mossley extended the lead in the second half with some very impressive and skilful finishing from Logsy and Hannah again. Liz Rodriguez rounded off the scoring showing great determination to finish after being flattened by a combination of keeper and defender. It was very pleasing to record our first clean sheet of the season with all the defence and Stacy in goal staying well organised at set pieces. Although we won by six goals, we had to work hard for this victory and match Dingle physically. Once again Lauren Kirkwood had an outstanding game, competitive, skilful and creative in midfield, and Hannah Parsons showed real class up front particularly in the second half. Well done girls. We now need to build on the confidence in the team and extend this winning run. 18th October 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Dingle 2-5 Mossley Hill (Mossley Hill goal scorers: Steph Lamkin, Holly Parkinson, Lauren Kirkwood (2) and one own goal) This was the game when the Reserve Team really turned on the style and a day when football was also the winner. Mossley Hill took on Dingle Ladies, who are a much older and physically stronger team, and also the current league leaders, and gave them a footballing lesson. Mossley took an early lead through a Dingle own goal and then relaxed to play some fabulous football in a twenty minute spell that saw us go three goals in front thanks to a 25 yard screamer from Steph and a good finish from a tight angle by Holly after Meg had put her through. Dingle came back into the game towards the end of the half and put Mossley under a lot a lot of pressure, but we held out for a 3-0 lead at half time. Mossley stepped it up again in the second half and produced some terrific team play and one touch football that Dingle couldn’t live with. But we also invited a lot of pressure on ourselves by giving away needless free kicks, corners and throw ins, and it was from two set pieces, a penalty and a corner, that Dingle scored their goals. Mossley were always comfortably in the lead though, with Logsy replying to Dingle’s goals with two superb headed goals of her own from Meg Brodie corners. There’s a lot we can improve on, but this really was a great performance. We had to earn the right to play our football by matching Dingle physically, and if we can build on this we’ll soon be making a real impression in this league. Two players in particular stand out for special mention. Lauren Kirkwood, not only for her two goals and the skills we expect from Logsy, but also for some important tackling, and Holly Parkinson, who put on a wonderful display of skilful attacking wing play. 11th October 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Mossley Hill 1-1 Town Green (Mossley Hill goal scorer: Nat McCoy) Mossley Hill had the better of a scrappy first half and created some decent chances but went in 0-0 at half time. We were all expecting Town Green to attack from the restart playing down the slope, but Mossley took the lead early in the second half with a well taken goal from Nat. Mossley deserved the lead and continued to create half chances. Liz had the ball in the net but was controversially ruled offside. Town Green also had chances and hit the woodwork twice. Mossley were under pressure for the last ten minutes and we thought we’d done enough only for Town Green to equalise in stoppage time. Another very competitive game, where once again Mossley deserved all three points without taking them. We need to show more desire and passion throughout the whole team and give everything, if we’re going to kill teams off and hold onto the lead at the end of tough games. A special mention to Alice Bowden who was outstanding in midfield, and also to Becky Doran who showed a great attitude and improved confidence as a second half substitute. 27th September 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Mossley Hill 2-3 Tranmere Rovers Reserves (Mossley Hill goal scorers: Meg Brodie, Nicky Murphy) This was the toughest test of the season so far for the Reserve Team and it was very pleasing to see the team step up to the challenge. The first half was fairly even, we defended the slope well and it was a mix up between defence and keeper that allowed the Tranmere forward in for an easy goal. Meg and Nicky had good chances to equalise but we finished the half 1-0 down. We put Tranmere on the back foot straight from the restart with two well taken goals from Meg and Nicky. Nicky hit the post whilst Mossley piled on the pressure, but we couldn’t get that important third goal before Tranmere started to come back into the game. Tranmere’s equaliser and winner both came in the last 15 minutes, which Mossley did not deserve after a brave and hard working performance. We need to keep our shape and concentrate better towards the end of matches if we’re going to beat the better teams, but this was a performance that everyone involved with the team should be proud of. Well done girls. A special mention to Chanty, coming back from injury with an outstanding performance, and also to Laura Caples, who was very impressive at centre half. 20th September 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Corinthians v Mossley Hill Match abandoned after 5 minutes Corinthians started the game with seven players and after 5 minutes had a player sent off for a deliberate handball on the line, which prevented Nat from scoring with a superb header. That left Corinthians with six players, and the rules are that a game has to be abandoned if one side has only six. The two sides then played a friendly. Becky, Amanda and Jess played for Corinthians in the first half and Laura, Nicky and Liz did so in the second half. Thanks for that girls. Mossley won the game 8-0 with goals from Molly, Nicky, Stacy (from the penalty spot) Lauren, Holly, Nat (2) and Sian. We played some good football but some of our play was sloppy as well. We need to play a lot better next week, and concentrate properly for 90 minutes if we’re going to get a result against Tranmere. 13th September 2009 Liverpool County FA Women’s League Birkdale 1-2 Mossley Hill (Mossley Hill goal scorers: Holly Parkinson, Hannah Lundberg) This was not only the first game of the season for the Reserve Team, but also the first game that this group of players had played together and the first 90 minutes of senior football for all but one of the players. The match was very competitive, Mossley Hill playing the better football but Birkdale always dangerous with ex Mossley Hill striker Amy Cooper starring for Birkdale. The Mossley Hill defence of Gemma, Aimee, Becky, Fiona and Molly coped well with the threat, and Alice worked hard to cut off the supply to the Birkdale forwards. Mossley created chances for Hannah and Nat, then towards the end of the first half, a superb ball from Meg put Holly through on the right to finish well from distance, low into the bottom corner. Birkdale came back strongly and put Mossley under a lot of pressure. The girls worked hard to stay in front and Stacy made a fine save diving low to her left before half time. The second half saw Mossley under pressure again, which eventually led to a goal by Amy Cooper after a goalmouth scramble and some brave defending. Mossley went straight up the other end and within two minutes were back in front. A great cross from Nicky on the right wing for Hannah to finish from close range. Mossley should’ve gone further ahead with Nicky, Hannah , Meg , Lauren and Holly all linking up well to create chances for Liz, Amanda and Meg, but we didn’t get that all important third goal and Stacy had to make her second superb save of the game from an Amy Cooper shot to make sure of all three points for Mossley. Well done girls. We created a lot of chances and should’ve won by more than one goal. Fiona Gregson was voted opposition player of the match by the Birkdale Manager. Well done Fiona. A special mention also to Lauren Kirkwood, playing her first game for over two years and working well with the younger players, well done Logsy. It’s a great start to the season. Keep up the good work and the team spirit.
