The girls earned a well-earned victory against Brazil (but this did not count towards the league table, as it turned out to be a friendly). It was however nice for the girls to get back to winning ways, after the disappointment of losing to The Feds the week before. In the game against Brazil, new signing Charnais scored 2 (earning the 'Woman of the Match' award), with the ever-present Demi getting on the scoresheet yet again. The match with the Feds was a real 'hum-dinger'! We found ourselves to be 2 goals down in as many first half minutes, but then managed to tighten up to concede 1 further goal before the break. After some fine tactical switching at half-time along with another one of Simon's motivational pep talks, the girls came out raring to go in the second half. They promptly managed to claw their way back in to the match (from 0-3) and eventully levelled to make it 3-3, with at least 5 minutes left on the clock. This match however did not have a fairytale ending as the Feds mustered up one last assault on our goal, which they converted to take the spoils. A draw would have been nothing less than Mossley Hill deserved however on the day it wasn't to be. Nevertheless the girls deserve a big 'Well Done' for their efforts in getting back into the match. Congratulations also to the Feds for their tenacity in coming out eventual winners. We will be back though, and the next time the Feds won't be gifted the start they received in this match! (3.11.09)
The team showed their 'bouncebackability' with a fine comeback after trailing 1-0 at half-time. 2 second half goals from Demi (who rightly earned 'Woman of the Match' for the second time this season) were enough to seal the victory. A stern word from Simon at half-time left the girls with little doubt that keeping a clean sheet requires hard work and not something to take for granted. Apart from the last 5 minutes of 'backs to the wall' defending, the girls looked comfortable after going ahead soon after the restart. Another goal whilst on top would have eased the pressure but that wasn't to be. Roll on this Saturday for the team's biggest test to date. The Feds top the table on goal difference and on paper at least are favourites to come out on top. That will mean nothing to our girls who I'm sure will go out there and give it their all... And who would bet against them!? Good Luck for Saturday! (Mums and Dads make sure they are all in bed by 7.30pm on Friday night). (22.10.09)
Another well-fought victory for Mossley Hill Girls. Goals from Oona ('Woman of the Match') Demi and Katie were enough to seal the victory. We were solid at the back and have yet to concede after 3 matches. Long may it continue (especially in the tough matches coming up against 3rd placed St Annes Rovers and table-topping The Feds)! We are currently 2nd in the league (on goal difference). For a look at the league click on 'Links To Other Sites', then to 'liverpool girls league'. The girls have been training indoors at Harthill Youth Centre in Wavertree coached by Simon and supported by Ashleigh Brown. (Ashleigh is new to coaching but said ''it's always been something that I've wanted to do'' ). Good luck Ashleigh and thanks for the time you are giving to this role. Simon could certainly do with the help as a total of 17 girls turned up for training last Monday. So many that the venue is now not big enough for the group and an alternative is now being sought. Good luck in the next match. C'mon Mossley Hill! (15th Oct 09)
What a great start to the season! 2 victories; and most important, all the girls said they enjoyed playing in both matches. Star player and 'Girl of the Match' against Brazil was Demi, who scored 4 goals, and put in an excellent all round performance. One of her goals was a 'screamer' into the top corner of the net, leaving the goalie with little chance of seeing it, let alone being able to pull of a save. Also, special mention for Oona who was solid at the back and contributed massively to the team's clean sheet. Brazil kept fighting to the bitter end, but they were no match for Mossley Hill; with the score a fair reward for the team's efforts. . The match against North Hill United was a similar affair, with Mossley Hill running out worthy winners. The score would have been much higher, if it hadn't been for the opposition goalkeeper, who made a string of brilliant saves to keep her team in the match. Demi scored 2 first half goals, before going in goal for the second half. Katie scored 2 after the break, which effectively sealed the match. 'Girl of the Match' against NHU was Kate, who displayed some fantastic dribbling and ball control. Her prowess in midfield (and defence) ensured that they were limited to few attempts on goal; meanwhile unselfishly carving out countless opportunities for her team mates. Well done girls!! Keep up the hard work. (Sept 09)
